Heat, humidity, and neglect are the three biggest threats to a baseball card collection. Here is how to think about where you store yours.

Attics are deceptively dangerous for card storage. In summer, temperatures can easily reach 130°F, and during wet seasons, humidity swings create condensation inside card sleeves. That combination causes warping, mold, and permanent color fading.
Cards stored in top-loaders and taken in and out of an attic over multiple seasons will show visible damage within a few years. If your collection has any value, attic storage is a roll of the dice.
A true climate-controlled space maintains a consistent temperature between 65°F and 75°F with humidity around 50%. This does not have to be a professional storage unit. A spare room with a dehumidifier and consistent HVAC can qualify.
The key word is consistent. A space that is 72°F in winter and 78°F in summer with a standalone AC unit that runs occasionally is not truly climate controlled.
