This is general information, not legal advice. Property rules differ by state (for example, California splits community property, while Illinois divides marital property in a way a judge finds fair), so check with your attorney, a mediator or your court's self-help center.
What goes on a household items list for divorce?
List every item room by room with a short description, when and how it was acquired, whether it came before or during the marriage, any proof you have, an estimated current value, and who wants it. Mark items you both want as disputed, and keep receipts and dated photos with the list.
| Room | Item | Acquired (date, how) | Before or during marriage | Proof | Estimated used value | Who wants it | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Living room | Sectional sofa | 2021, bought together | During | Card statement | $600 | Both | Disputed |
| Kitchen | Stand mixer | 2015, gift from my mother | Before | Photo from 2016 | $150 | Me | Agreed |
| Office | Laptop | 2023, bought by spouse | During | Order email | $500 | Spouse | Agreed |
| Bedroom | Grandmother's ring | Inherited 2019 | During (inheritance) | Estate letter | Appraisal pending | Me | Check with attorney |
| Garage | Mountain bike | 2017 | Before | Receipt | $350 | Spouse | Agreed |
| Dining room | Table and six chairs | 2020, bought together | During | Photo only | $400 | Both | Disputed |
Values are illustrative only. As one state example, California's disclosure form FL-142, Schedule of Assets and Debts has a line for “Household furniture, furnishings, appliances” and one for “Jewelry, antiques, art, coin collections”, with columns for separate property, date acquired and fair market value. Starting from scratch? Photograph each room first.
How do you divide household items in a divorce?
Common methods: each person lists wants and needs and you trade, you take turns choosing, you build two piles of similar value, or you sell things and split the money. Leave the hardest items for mediation. Then put the final split in writing.
California Courts Self-Help says a judge has to approve how you divide your property, and you can reach an agreement and ask the judge to approve it. Illinois Legal Aid Online says an Illinois split is equitable, not necessarily half and half. These are two state examples, not national rules. If you are moving into a smaller place, plan for what fits.
What value do you put on used furniture and electronics?
Use what the item would sell for used today, not what you paid and not what a new one would cost. Check recent used listings for the same model and note the source. For jewelry, art or collectibles, get a real appraisal instead of guessing.
How do you show an item was yours before the marriage?
Gather proof dated before the wedding: receipts or order emails, older photos with the item in them, gift cards or notes, and inheritance paperwork. Attach that proof to the item on your list. Rules vary by state, so ask your attorney or mediator how your state treats items owned before marriage.
Illinois presumes property obtained during a marriage is marital unless shown otherwise with evidence. California counts what you owned before marriage or after separation, plus gifts and inheritance, as separate property. More on proving ownership and value.
What if you both want the same thing?
Mark it disputed on the list, write down why it matters to each of you, and add any value evidence you have. Finish everything else, then take the short list of disputed items to mediation or your attorneys. A few open items are easier to settle than a whole house.
Should you photograph everything before one of you moves out?
Yes. A dated record of what was in the home helps both of you and avoids later arguments about what existed. Walk every room, open closets and drawers, and photograph the contents. Share it with your spouse or helpers, and keep the tone neutral.
California Courts Self-Help warns that if you hide or leave things out of disclosures, the judge could take away some of your property or order you to pay your spouse's attorney's fees.
Keeping the list in one place
Photograph a drawer, shelf or room corner and multi-item detection creates one entry per item, filling in name, brand and model when visible. Add labels such as Mine, Spouse, Disputed and Before marriage; an item can have several, and labels work across rooms. Open a label to see its items, or make a read-only share link or QR code for it.
A read-only link lets an attorney or mediator view without an account or editing, and you can revoke it any time. Attach receipts and appraisals as photos or PDFs, forward old order emails, and add notes like “gift from my mother, 2015”. An estimated value from the photo is a starting point, not a formal appraisal; attach a real appraisal for anything valuable. For a mediator's spreadsheet, export the list as CSV or Excel.
Photograph each room once, label what is yours, theirs and undecided, and share a read-only list with the people helping you.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to list every household item in a divorce?
Courts usually ask for a property disclosure, and the detail varies by state. In California, form FL-142 asks you to identify household furniture, furnishings and appliances. Group low-value things by category, list valuable items one by one, and ask your attorney or mediator how detailed your forms need to be.
What household items count as separate property?
Generally, things one of you owned before the marriage, plus gifts and inheritances, but the rules and exceptions vary by state. California treats gifts and inheritance as separate property, and Illinois presumes property obtained during a marriage is marital unless shown otherwise. Keep proof of when and how you got each item.
How do I value used furniture for a divorce?
Use fair market value: what the piece would sell for used today, not what you paid or what a new one costs. Look at recent listings for the same model and condition, note where your number came from, and get a professional appraisal for antiques, art, jewelry or anything else valuable.
Can we divide household items without going to court?
Many couples agree on their own or with a mediator. In California a judge still makes a formal order, and you can reach an agreement and ask the judge to approve it. Check your state's process with your court's self-help center or an attorney.
